Does OSHA require supervisors to have 10-hour training?

OSHA requires you have a competent person implementing your safety program. A competent person must have knowledge and authority. One way to document the knowledge requirement is to provide OSHA 10-hour training to your supervisors. So, no you are not REQUIRED to do 10-hour training, but it is an effective way to meet the knowledge requirement. In addition, many general contractors now require all of their subcontractors to have someone 10-hour trained.


When do OSHA 10hr and 30hr cards expire?

There is no expiration on a 10 hour or 30 hour card. However, since the OSHA standards change regularly, and because you tend to forget what you learned over time, it is a good idea to re-train every two to three years.


What training will my employees receive in an OSHA 10 hour class?

The 10 hour course is comprised of four required topics and any elective topics selected to equal the ten hours of instruction. The course will be conducted by an authorized OSHA Trainer.


The four Required topics are as follows:

   -   Introduction to OSHA

   -  OSHA Focus Four Hazards: Fall Protection, Electrical, Struck By, and Caught In/Between

   -   Personal Protective & Lifesaving Equipment

   -   Health Hazards in Construction


Electives topics include:

   -   Materials Handling, Storage, Use & Disposal

   -   Tools - Hand and Power

   -   Scaffolds

   -   Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Elevators, & Conveyors

   -   Excavations

   -   Stairways and Ladders


Any of the OSHA Subparts listed above can be chosen as electives.
